Teacher Logan:What makes you happy? This is a question I often like to ask my students to get a better understanding of who they are and what interests them. Answers can range from getting a new pair of shoes to listening to their favorite song. All answers are great but scientists say there is one thing that makes us the happiest. Think you know the answer? Participate in the activities below and see if what scientists say can make YOU happy.

Teacher Logan:Before we start, let’s get an idea of how happy you are now. Rate your happiness on a scale of one to ten. One is not happy at all and ten is completely happy.

Teacher Logan:Next, watch this short video. The video will tell you what scientists believe is the secret to happiness. Before you watch, make a prediction of what you think the secret is. Also, don’t forget to turn on the subtitles if you are having some trouble understanding. Enjoy!

Teacher Logan:Did you guess correctly? If so, great job! Only one of my students has made the correct prediction in my four years of teaching.

Teacher Logan:Now that you know the key to happiness, it’s time to take that knowledge and put it to use. Take some time now to think of someone who is very important and influential in your life. Think of what you would like to say to them and what you would like to thank them for. Here are a few phrases in English you can use to show thanks and gratitude.

  • Thank you.

  • Thanks a bunch.

  • Thank you so much for…

  • Thank you very much for…

  • Thanks a lot for…

  • Many thanks for…

  • I’d like to thank you for…

  • I can’t thank you enough for…

  • I really appreciate your help with…

Teacher Logan:Now that you know some phrases to show thanks, write down a short letter to the person who is most important and influential in your life. After you finish writing your letter, call the person you wrote about and read your letter.

Teacher Logan:How do you feel now? Are you happier? Take some time and rate your happiness. Is it higher than before?

Spreading happiness can seem difficult but it is as simple as saying “thank you.” Next time you get a coffee or someone opens a door for you, don’t forget to give a smile and say “thanks.” Not only will it make their day better but it will improve yours too.
